Hypertension (high blood pressure) screening should be done at least annually in adults over the age of 40 and in adults who are at risk for hypertension. Risk factors for hypertension include family history of hypertension, older age, African-American race, overweight/obesity, lack of physical activity, stress, and tobacco use. The diagnosis of hypertension varies by organizations. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg or ≥130/80 mmHg.
Hypertension can be managed with lifestyle modifications. However, for some, medications are needed to control hypertension in addition to lifestyle modification.
